WHO WAS TRUUS WIJSMULLER?
Thanks to her dedication and courage, Truus Wijsmuller from Alkmaar brought more than 10,000 mainly Jewish children to safety. Her negotiations with Adolf Eichmann, in the lion’s den in Vienna, marked a breakthrough in the organization that later grew into one of the greatest rescue operations in history; the so-called “Child Transports”. Tante Truus is now honored by her hometown Alkmaar with a street name and a statue. Historian Leen Spaans talks about the special deeds and the steadfast character of this resistance woman.
